Pre-Conference Workshop: The Representation Project - Welcome & Introduction
Pre-Conference Workshop: The Representation Project - Film Screening: Miss Representation and Q&A with Jennifer Siebel Newsom
Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Miss Representation exposes how mainstream media and culture contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film draws back a curtain to reveal a glaring reality we live with every day but fail to see – how the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls makes it difficult for women to feel powerful and achieve leadership positions. In a society where media is the most persuasive force shaping cultural norms, the collective message we receive is that a woman’s value and power lie in her youth, beauty and sexuality, and not in her capacity as a leader. While women have made great strides in leadership over the past few decades, the United States is still 33rd out of the 49 highest-income countries when it comes to women in the national legislature. And it’s not better outside of government. Women make up only 4.6% of S&P 500 CEOs and 17% of directors, executive producers, writers, cinematographers and editors working on the top 250 domestic grossing films. Stories from teenage girls and provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, entertainers, activists, and academics, like Katie Couric, Rosario Dawson, Gloria Steinem, Margaret Cho, Condoleezza Rice, Rachel Maddow and Nancy Pelosi, build momentum as Miss Representation accumulates startling facts and statistics that will leave the audience shaken, but armed with a new perspective.

Since Massachusetts passed the nation’s first law last summer prohibiting employers from asking job applicants for their current salaries or salary histories, lawmakers in several other states and cities have begun pushing similar measures. Philadelphia’s ban, which was scheduled to take effect May 23, is being challenged by the city’s Chamber of Commerce, New York City passed its ban in April, and California’s ban took effect in January as an amendment to an existing fair pay law. These laws are in response to the pay discrimination that often follows women throughout their careers since employers often base offers to new hires on salary history. Data shows that women are paid an average of 6.6% less than men in their first jobs, even when controlling for personal demographics, occupation, college major, hours worked, and location. Despite this trend, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled earlier this year in Rizo vs. Yovino that an employer can base pay on prior salary “so long as it showed that its use of prior salary effectuated some business policy.” This session will examine these legislative solutions to the gender wage gap, the likely impact of the appellate court decision, and what steps women can take on their own to ensure that their compensation is on par with that of their male colleagues.

While men historically have held most of our industry’s leadership positions, more women are ascending the corporate ladder into senior-level positions. And since most people enter the industry by referral, these executive women are using their newfound power to encourage other women to seek careers in insurance. But unlike today’s industry leadership, comprised mostly of Baby-Boomers and Gen Xers who are used to working in structured environments with definitive boundaries and hierarchies, these new recruits come from a generation that prefers working in collaborative environments with open participation from all individuals with different ideas and perspectives. This panel, featuring past Women to Watch honorees and their daughters, will address how our industry’s leading female executives are using their influence to attract other women to the commercial insurance industry. We also will learn how these shifting demographics will reshape the way our industry recruits, trains and promotes young talent going forward.
