Mr. Smith, with more than 32 years of diverse experience in the insurance sector, has worked with Kemper Insurance, Continental Insurance, C N A. He was Assistant Vice President, Risk Management for Guardsmark, and was President of a national Managing General Agency prior to joining Family Dollar Stores in 2003. Mr. Smith is currently Divisional Vice President – Risk Management for Family Dollar Stores, and President of Family Dollar Insurance, Inc., Family Dollar’s captive insurance company. Family Dollar is a fortune 300 company with more than 50,000 employees, more than 6,900 stores and annual revenues in excess of $7 billion. Mr. Smith has served as Vice President and on the Board of Directors for the Carolina’s Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS) Chapter and the Board of Directors of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the National MS Society. Mr. Smith is currently serving as a Work Place Task Force Member – National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention under the auspices of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), a public health agency within the US Department of Health and Human Services.
Mr. Smith has spoken on various risk management topics including two Disability Management Employer Coalition (DMEC) International Conferences on Workers’ Compensation Return to Work programs and Traumatic Workplace Response programs, the National Workers’ Compensation and Disability Conference on Traumatic Response and Workers’ Compensation Return to Work, the Case Management Society of America’s National Conference on Pharmaceutical Abuse Management in Workers’ Compensation, as well as the annual PartnerSource Texas WC Non-subscription Conference, July 2010, The Conference Board – Corporate Security, Business Continuity & Crisis Management Conference in New York City, March, 2011, and on Insurance Fraud at the Annual National RIMS Conference in Vancouver, Canada, May, 2011, Crisis Response to Workplace Violence at the Annual National RIMS Conference in Vancouver, Canada, May, 2011, the National Workers; Compensation & Occupational Medicine Conference, July, 2011.
For his work in the development of successful post traumatic response to workplace violence and acceleration of return to work, Mr. Smith was the 2010 recipient of Risk and Insurance Management Magazine’s Risk Innovator of the Year award and the 2010 recipient of Liberty Mutual’s Responsibility Leader Award.
Mr. Smith attended Boston University prior to earning a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree from Syracuse University.
