Richard P. Byrne is the Co-Managing Partner of L’Abbate, Balkan, Colavita & Contini, LLP. His practice concentrates in the areas of insurance law and construction law and includes the representation of insurance carriers and reinsurers, together with a national contractor, on a broad range of complex matters.Mr. Byrne is also regularly requested to act as a Mediator on a wide array of issues and has been handling Alternative Dispute Resolutions for over 20 years. He received his initial training through the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York and, since that time, he has mediated a wide array of matters, in numerous contexts, involving various areas of the law, including employment discrimination, construction and commercial disputes, complex personal injury and property damage claims, insurance coverage matters, risk transfer disputes and disability claims.In 2013, Mr. Byrne was selected by Kenneth R. Feinberg, the former Administrator of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, to assist in the mediation and resolution of Hurricane Sandy claims.In 2014, Mr. Byrne was selected to join the Mediation and Arbitration Panel of NAM (National Arbitration and Mediation), one of the country’s most highly-regarded providers of ADR services.He is a Specialty Editorial Board Member on Alternative Dispute Resolution for the Journal of American Law and, in addition to his work through NAM, he is a member of the Mediation panels for both the United States District Court and the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of New York.In 2014, Mr. Byrne was also asked to join a sub-panel of Mediators to assist the Eastern District in addressing a backlog of over 1,000 Hurricane Sandy-related lawsuits pending before the Court.Mr. Byrne then had the privilege of being chosen by the 2014 New York Law Journal Reader Rankings Survey as a Top 10 “Best Individual Mediator”, followed by the honor of being named as Mediator of the Year by the Institute of Jewish Humanities.Mr. Byrne has been awarded an A-V rating by Martindale-Hubbell, the highest rating available, based upon its peer review process. Mr. Byrne has also been recognized on multiple occasions as a New York Metro Super Lawyer by his peers.Mr. Byrne received his Juris Doctorate Magna Cum Laude from New York Law School in 1982, where he was a member and editor of the Law Review. Mr. Byrne is admitted to practice before the Courts of the State of New York, and the United States District Courts for the Southern, Eastern and Northern Districts of New York. As Mr. Byrne’s practice is national (and, as required, international) in scope, he additionally secures admission pro hac vice in individual matters, as needed, working with select local counsel.
