Biography

Joseph Bias is the Department Managing Attorney for the Liability Department of Vernis & Bowling’s Columbia office.

Joseph was born in Columbia, South Carolina and is a lifelong South Carolina resident. He graduated from Wofford College where he obtained a B.A. in Humanities. After graduation, Joseph spent a year working as a college administrator before attending law school at University of South Carolina School of Law, in Columbia. While at law school, Joseph was selected as the Chief Justice of the Mock Trial Bar, where he originated and developed the law school’s first trial advocacy competition.

After graduating law school and becoming a member of the South Carolina Bar, Joseph clerked for the Honorable Alison R. Lee in Columbia, the Chief Administrative Judge of Richland County’s common pleas (civil) court at the time. Following his clerkship, Joseph became an Assistant Public Defender for the Richland County Public Defender’s Office, gaining valuable trial and daily courtroom presentation experience while regularly handling a high volume caseload.

Joseph has experience representing South Carolina insured’s including businesses, school districts, and individuals in South Carolina and Federal Courts. He has worked for well-renowned state and national law firms as a litigation attorney, with practice areas including premises liability, construction, director and officer liability, governmental liability, slander/defamation, products liability, education law, and employment law.

Joseph’s experience in various courts with a diverse clientele gives him a unique perspective on how to best advocate for his clients. Should a matter reach the trial stage, Joseph has experience and comfort in South Carolina’s courts to help reach the best resolution possible for both the carrier and the client. He has defended and obtained favorable outcomes in both trials and settlements throughout all of South Carolina. He has presented on employment law and education law topics across the state.
