Biography

Theresa Guertin has spent her entire career advocating on behalf of policyholders. One of her main focuses is on giving clients the most current, practical perspective on the risk management issues they encounter. Theresa handles issues involving all lines of coverage, and frequently works with SDV’s contractor and broker clients to help spot potential problems in policies before they are issued and help negotiate better terms in policies at renewals.

Theresa has a particular interest in helping clients develop airtight contractual risk transfer provisions, and has extensive experience in developing and rewriting insurance procurement language to meet the changes demands of the insurance and construction industries. She has worked with owner/developers, general contractors, construction managers, and large subcontractors to understand what they are requiring and what they are promising, and to make sure they are getting the insurance they need for their particular project.

Theresa is admitted in multiple state and federal jurisdictions, and last year was admitted to argue before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in a major dispute involving workers’ compensation insurance issued through a wrap-up insurance program. Theresa has been named to the New England Super Lawyers’ Rising Stars list for three consecutive years (2015-2017).  She is active in the Insurance Law Section of the Connecticut Bar Association as the Legislative Liaison for the second consecutive term and, in that role, stays abreast of all new legislation concerning insurance in Connecticut.

Theresa and her husband live in Waterbury, Connecticut with their son, who was born in 2012. She admits to a lifelong passion for writing, which she uses to give clear, plain-English advice to clients, unburdened by legalese, cutting right to the important issues that her clients are concerned about.
