James Merritt

Biography

James Merritt, Jr. is an experienced insurance defense litigator, with a practice focusing on the defense of claims including those for wrongful death and catastrophic injury, premises liability, and trucking accidents. James has successfully been the lead counsel in numerous jury and bench trials resulting in defense verdicts and judgments.  These results helped James get selected 3 years in a row as a Super Lawyers Rising Star by Atlanta Magazine, a distinction reserved for the top 2.5 percent of lawyers in Georgia.  Having grown up in Gwinnett County, Georgia, James developed good relationships with numerous judges, attorneys, and neutrals all over the state.  While James prides himself on his reputation for being an ethical lawyer who practices law with integrity, his clients love that James is known for his aggressive litigation philosophy of always striving to be proactive rather than reactive.

James earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Georgia in Athens. He then earned his Juris Doctor from Mercer University’s Walter F. George School of Law in 2008. James was also accepted into the No. 1 Legal Writing Program in the nation, where he earned his Certificate of Advanced Legal Writing, Drafting, and Research.  While in law school, he advanced to the final rounds of the Lawson Oral Argument Competition.

When not at work, James can be found cheering on the Atlanta Braves and Georgia Bulldogs, struggling on the golf course, or spending time with his son Harper and daughter Presley.  James enjoys raising money for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and is an active member of Cross Pointe Church in Duluth, Georgia.
