CLM’s Litigation Management Institute (LMI) was created in 2011, with the goal of helping CLM members better understand the dual perspectives of handling claims and litigation management from the attorney and client sides to improve the relationship and optimize results. A key component of LMI’s focus is on educating attorneys regarding “the business of litigation.” One of LMI’s original chancellors, IAT Insurance Group’s Vice President of Claims Larry Beemer, gives us a preview of the event, which takes place Oct. 17-20, 2019, at Loyola University Chicago’s School of Law.
Who should attend LMI?
It was originally designed for the CLM attorney who had 7-12 years of experience, but we’ve had plenty of firm partners complete the program, and even some younger attorneys. Interestingly, upwards of 25 percent of attendees now are insurance professionals seeking to hone their professional skills because many of these courses go right to the heart of what they’re doing in their jobs every day.
How has LMI changed over the years?
Over the years, the chancellors have continued to change and update LMI. In terms of courses, while many have stayed the same, there are several that have been updated or changed, such as those related to eDiscovery, better budgeting, and data mining. Many original instructors remain too, but we’ve not been afraid to bring in new instructors and mix things up. My fellow chancellors and I evaluate the speakers every year to ensure that we have the best educators and most relevant material.
One thing that hasn’t changed, however, is the basic structure of the event. It is very selective, and limited to 100 people or less. Candidates for the Certified Litigation Management Professional designation participate in a rigorous course study consisting of three days of intensive education and homework in a group setting of other like-minded, experienced professionals, which makes it a unique event.
What things are you most proud of in your work with LMI?
I’m most proud of the legacy of LMI. Certainly, we are proud to be able to impart knowledge to attendees and help them get better at their craft, but the thing I’ve always liked and appreciated—which we never imagined at the beginning of this—is the camaraderie and friendship that has become a big part of the event. The intensity and group nature of the work creates a bond, and so it’s not unusual to hear, “I went to the CLM Annual and our LMI group got back together,” or “I still have all of my friends from LMI; we send notes to each other and still help each other in our daily business.” I never envisioned that, and I find it exciting that LMI is playing a part in creating those relationships.
What kinds of responses do you usually get from those who just completed LMI?
Usually, the response is, “This is the hardest thing I’ve done since law school, but it’s the best set of courses I’ve ever experienced.” I’ve had professionals come up to me and say, “I can’t thank you enough for what you put together; I am never running my law firm or handling a claim the same way again.” Those kinds of comments are gratifying to hear, and encourage me every year in my work with LMI.To learn more or to register, go to theclm.org.
