It’s back to school time, which means CLM’s 2017 internship program is wrapping up for the year. For those who don’t know, CLM plays matchmaker every summer, pairing up promising college juniors and seniors with insurers and third-party administrators for an eight-week-long internship in which the participants not only earn their adjuster licenses and valuable work experience, but also some much-appreciated cash. It’s a great program that we’ve been growing for several years to help bring awareness to the fantastic opportunities that a career in claims affords.
But don’t take it from me. Take it from Michael Mannix, a CLM intern who worked at Gallagher Bassett between his junior and senior years at Illinois State University in 2016. Trying his hand at accounting during his first year in college, Michael decided to switch to risk management his sophomore year, eventually graduating with a double major in finance and risk management. He heard about CLM’s internship opportunity through his father.
“During my internship, I did something different every day,” says Mannix. “I worked at different departments, learning about liabilities and workers compensation. It gave me the options to know exactly what was available and what I liked to do. So many times, I think the best way to learn is by actually doing the work.”
Mannix parlayed the experience and the connections he made into a full-time job at Gallagher Bassett this year after his recent graduation. And his Indiana adjuster license is good for for two years, which is reciprocated in all states but New York, New Mexico, Hawaii, and Alabama. Not a bad way to start what looks like a very promising career. Congratulations to Michael, and to all of our CLM internship participants, past and present!
