Having just completed her first year of claims adjusting, Caitlin Modlin explains the role her family played in finding her career and shares some of her experiences in the industry so far as a young professional working as a senior liability claims representative for Farmers Insurance Group.
Like Mother, Like Daughter
Modlin says observing her mother Phyllis’ claims career at Markel served as encouragement for her own career pursuits. She says witnessing her mother attending and speaking at conferences and being continually challenged by the complexity of her job made a great impression on her, inspiring her to pursue a similar career in which she could learn and grow in.
Best Part of Her Day
“Every claim I encounter is unique and requires different problem-solving skills, which constantly challenges me.”
Training Day
Modlin says thorough training is a top priority at Farmers, which is reflective of her experience at the company. Through the comprehensive training Farmers provided, she says she became familiar with policy details, the claims handling process, and more, which gave her more confidence in her job.
Promoting Claims to Younger Professionals
“If you’re looking for an opportunity beyond a typical 9-5 office job and like working with people and honing new skills, you should consider working in claims.”
Balancing Out
Modlin says dealing with insurance claims can be a stressful experience for most people, so being able to help them through the process and assist in their times of need is one of the greatest joys of her job. On the other side, delivering hard news is the most difficult. She says trying to keep customers happy while resolving claims in a timely manner is a critical yet challenging task at times.
Using Communications Degree
“The claims industry is people-centric. To navigate it successfully, it’s imperative that you understand others and be able to express ideas and information clearly.” -Modlin, on how her communications degree has helped her in her job.
