Cruising for Careers
Proving that she’s never met a stranger, Murphy found herself chatting up a fellow cruise ship passenger while celebrating her college graduation. The passenger happened to be an agent for a major carrier and expounded on all the opportunities available within the insurance industry. After trying her hand in advertising for a year, Murphy remembered the advice and made the jump to insurance.
“You make a good claims team great by self-empowering them and giving them autonomy.”
Murphy, explaining that having clear goals, creating a learning culture, and investing in and instilling confidence is the secret to being a good manager and leader.
Getting the Word Out
Murphy says she was having a group discussion earlier this year with industry professionals when someone said that young professionals do not feel the insurance industry is “sexy.” It made her chuckle, but she says the industry and its employees need to take the comment to heart. She suggests partnering with non-profits and even middle and high schools to show how rewarding the work can actually be.
“I have made so many connections and friends by being a part of CLM, and through those relationships I have gained so much claims knowledge.”
Murphy, explaining what she loves and appreciates most about CLM.
Getting DEI Right
Murphy says she is encouraged by the heightened focus insurers are placing on DEI efforts, but there is one area ripe for improvement: The promise to follow through on developing and advancing diverse employees, and changing the mindset that standards and quality have to be sacrificed to hire diverse talent. She encourages organizations to look deeply at themselves to ensure DEI is embedded in all aspects.
“I come from a family full of professional bull riders. No, I don’t ride bulls, but I am an adventure junkie!”
Murphy, who prefers globetrotting with her husband instead of riding in the rodeo.
