Caitlin Modlin
Claims & Risk Administrator, Tesla
Caitlin Modlin credits her mother, Markel Claims Director and Senior Counsel (and CLM fellow) Phyllis Modlin, with introducing her to the world of claims. “I genuinely would never have thought of doing this if it hadn’t been for her,” she says. Since then, she has blazed an impressive path all her own, beginning her career at Farmers Insurance and moving to the world of food delivery claims before landing at Tesla.
Over her career, Modlin has gained a keen understanding of technology and the key role it plays in risk and insurance. As her nominator states, “She is passionate about leveraging her insurance knowledge with technology to shape the future of claims management and risk mitigation.”
At Tesla, Modlin frequently handles claims and legal issues involving new technologies that do not have established precedents. She also stays on top of cutting-edge technology topics such as artificial intelligence (AI), recently earning an AI Strategy Certificate from Cornell University and participating in a CodeX workshop at Stanford on the generative AI legal landscape.
Modlin seeks to share the knowledge she accumulates through mentoring and speaking engagements. She has presented at both the CLM Annual Conference and Construction Conference on practical uses of AI in the insurance industry.
Modlin also serves as secretary of CLM’s San Francisco Bay Area Chapter, a role she says “was the first instance [in which] I got to be part of a group where I…saw insurance…and outside counsel getting along. The connections that I made there with a lot of firms have served me well to this day.”
