Lessons Learned
“Always be prepared!” Shane’s motto when it comes to handling claims. She recounted a story of when her partner defense counsel was in a fender bender on the way to trial. He was fine, but unable to make it to the trial. It worked out because Shane was prepared. Claims are anything but predictable, says Shane.
“Network and build your village. Each relationship is an opening to a new professional challenge, opportunity, or a source of help—on claims and career. Get a mentor. Invest the time and ask questions. Attend conferences and networking events.”
Shane, on her advice for those new to insurance.
Emerging Trends
Shane noted two emerging industry trends to watch: the use of AI in the claims space to get ahead of potential trends and issues, and risk engineering in the climate change space to mitigate weather-related losses. The industry can have a meaningful impact on society by supporting greener ways of doing business, says Shane.
“Stan Greenspan (Crum & Forster) nudged me to attend Claims College and I am glad I did. CLM [also] gave me a scholarship to attend [Litigation Management Institute], which resulted in my CLMP.”
Shane, a Claims College instructor, stresses the benefits of earning industry designations.
From Law to Insurance
After practicing law at a plaintiff’s firm and then a defense firm, Shane switched gears and began working for a carrier. “I started my claims career at Continental Insurance Company and never looked back. It has been over 25 years and it has been a great experience. CLM has always been a great supporter of my career.”
“I love spending time with family and friends. I enjoy cooking, crafting, container gardening, and DYI. I am lucky to live at the beach, so I get to enjoy all things beachy!"
